I try to bear witness to what I know you know.
— James Baldwin, "Social Change and the Writer's Responsibility"

The Hope of America is a place where we can express our deepest personal convictions in public. This relies on our freedom to speak. This freedom does not guarantee our safety. To protect ourselves, we remain silent or retreat to narrow group affiliations.

But belonging comes at a price -- a pernicious process of othering that causes us to commit all forms of betrayal, even of our own selves. And what happens when these groups fall apart? When one identity disqualifies us from another? Is there another way? Can we live in the UNsafe spaces outside and between the identities that define us?

How does a little black boy born in Jackson, Mississippi make a home outside the lines?

Gio and I began developing this musical solo about the dirt of home and the dirt of love in 2015. The show is on now through 7/15. Hope to see you there!
